TREASURY NOTES

July/August, 2004

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
Charlene Cockrum, Alamosa County

I want to start my term as President with a "BIG" Thank You to Roxy Huber, staff, and the Treasurers from District 2.  I think the summer conference was wonderful.  Steve Hutt was right when he said Roxy was a new Treasurer, Chairman of the Legislative committee and then hosted the conference, and we all learned that she can multi-task very well.  I think everyone will agree that it was very informative and a great time was had by all attending.  I also want to thank Steve Hutt.  I think he will be a hard act to follow.  Steve is always so organized and did a great job as President of CCTA and we will miss his expertise.  I hope he will continue to keep in touch with CCTA in the years to come.  I also appreciate the knowledge the Executive Board has to offer and I am expecting a good and productive year.

Last week several members of the CCTA met at CCI in Denver with Peg Ackerman, Laura Forbes, President of the Assessors' Association, and several people concerning Severed Mineral Interests.  We had some very interesting discussions with both Associations, and Logan County Conmmissioner, Greg Etl.  We were also discussing getting all of the elected officials [together] again, there was [a] Colorado Elected Officials Association offered to all offices.  Peg Ackerman thought it would be a good idea, especially for the salary increase bill.

I also am just getting my committees together.  If you wish to serve on a certain committee, please let me know!

Isn't everyone excited that we are not up for re-election this year?  We can just listen to all of the other candidates.  Hope to see everyone in Limon, Grand Junction, Castle Rock, and Fort Collins.

MESSAGE FROM PAST PRESIDENT:
Steve Hutt, City and County of Denver

As my last act as the 2003-2004 President, I want to give a huge "well done" to Roxy Huber and her staff for hosting us at Conference.  As I mentioned at the dinner, Roxy not only coordinated all the work that goes into hosting Conference, but at the same time she served as our Legislative Committee chairman - itself a big assignment.  The Conference was great from beginning to end.

I am so very glad that, as "fate" would have it, I had a chance to serve as President prior to my time as Denver's Treasurer drawing to a close on October 31 this year.  I will miss all of you, especially as each June and October roll around.  Who knows - maybe I'll just need to come visit that alluring woman from Central City who charmed us into having the 2008 Conference in Gilpin County!

I want to let you know that I have now been officially offered, and have accepted, the position as the Executive Director of Denver's pension fund.  This is the $1.6 billion fund that covers all civilian employees of the City and County of Denver - approximately 9,500 current employees and 6,100 retirees.  It will be a tremendous opportunity for me professionally.

The downside, as I've said, will be leaving my staff, and leaving the CCTA after so many (20) years.  But I have purposely arranged to stay in office until November 1, in part so that I can come to Seminar in October and bring my successor with me to introduce to all of you.

On a personal note, please let me say thanks once more for everything that so many of you did to support me and the Executive Board of the Association during the past year.  I feel good about how things went, and certain that under Charlene's leadership this too will be a great year.

A Message from Gini

EVEN Treasurers who have been in office for 18 years sometimes have questions or "lapses" of memory.  When this occurs you try to think of a Treasurer that may have been in this situation and can "jar" your memory.  Well, I just want to than Ed Murray, La Plata County, for directing me in the right direction and I found exactly what I was looking for.  THANKS, ED!!!

Just remember that when questions happen - call a fellow Treasurer, and I'll just bet you dollars to a donut that your questions will be answered.

H-M-M-M, now did I say that right???  "dollars to a donut" or "dollars to donuts" or "donuts to a dollar"?  Oh well, I guess you all do know what I am trying to say . . . or then maybe you don't.  In that case, just forget that I said anything.  (Oh, God, I've been in this office toooo loonngg)

TRIBUTE TO THE TROOPS -
THE TRUE HEROES

It is with a heavy heart that I witness the war.
The hurt and destruction that is being thrust on each of us
Will not soon be forgotten or easier to bear.
So many lives will be changed forever or even lost.

I do not personally know any of the young men and women
Who have chosen to protect this great country and all for which it stands
But to know that they are giving everything for this nation
Is perhaps the greatest gift any person can give our land.

The cause is just but not easy to understand.
We are a strong people who have been tested time and again.
We will not be easily discouraged with our task at hand.
Peace and security are within our reach - we know we can.

Our prayers and thoughts are constantly with each of you.
Our hopes and dreams are that you soon will return to your families.
We salute your strength, valor, courage and your will to be true.
Our nation will be a better place to live - You are all our heroes.
